We Have GREAT Volunteers!

                                  Interested in volunteering?

Volunteers are a critical part of our therapy team. Our volunteers help children prepare for the riding session and walk alongside them during each and every session. As a volunteer you will assist each child as directed by the therapist to ensure maximum participation and benefit.

We have opportunities for volunteering in both our hippotherapy and therapeutic riding programs. Volunteers should be 14 years or older. Experience with horses is not required. Exceptional Equestrians offers on site training sessions for new volunteers.

Please contact us for information on scheduled training sessions.

It is our goal that your volunteer experience at Exceptional Equestrians be educational, fulfilling and fun!  Please refer to comments below made by one of our past volunteers.

When I first began volunteering at Exceptional Equestrians, my motive to help out the organization was primarily selfish.  For the most part, I volunteered simply to fulfill school requirements for service hours.  Little did I know that this school requirement would evoke from me compassion that would extend far beyond service hours.

As I continued volunteering with the people at Exceptional Equestrians, including my fellow volunteers and the special needs children that this program is all about, the sense of duty to fill service hours quickly dissolved and was replaced with a sense of family within the barn.  I felt a connection with the children riding the horses as I walked alongside them, keeping them safe.  Our relationships were sealed with a laugh, a smile, or a look in their eye of pure enjoyment as we played interactive games that not only worked the children’s motor skills and cognitive abilities, but also served as a source of fun within the barn.  As I saw children laughing as they braided their horse’s hair or giggling while throwing cannon balls on “Pirate Day,” I realized that therapy (and volunteering for that matter) did not have to be a chore, it could be fun!

Eventually my service hours were complete, yet my dedication to Exceptional Equestrians did not waiver.  My service there was no longer about me.It was about seeing the sense of gratitude from the parents of the riders. It was about laughing with the children, building relationships with them, and seeing the love for life they have as they ride a top the horses once a week during the spring, summer, and fall. Exceptional Equestrians gave me a greater appreciation for the simple joys in life, and I will keep coming back to the barn to volunteer, not to fulfill duties, but to be a part of the Exceptional Equestrians family.
