Volunteer at Exceptional Equestrians

Volunteers are vital to our mission. We are able to provide exceptional therapy services thanks to the dedicated individuals who share their time and talents.

Volunteer opportunities are available Monday through Friday to adults and teens age 14 and older.


  • Weekly shift of 1 hour or more
  • Minimum of 15 cumulative service hours

All volunteers that assist during riding sessions start in the role of side walker for a minimum of two weeks. Volunteers who have horsemanship experience can complete our horse lead assessment to become horse leaders.

Horse leaders

Horse Leaders lead horses during therapeutic horseback riding sessions for clients with disabilities. Duties include walking the horse during the therapy session, grooming the horse, putting on tack, taking off tack, cleaning the barn, putting the horse in the stall or pasture, and other duties as needed.

  • Must be knowledgeable and proficient in the following:
    • Halter
    • Lead rope
    • English tack
    • Western tack
    • Grooming tools
  • Must know how to:
    • Halter a horse
    • Saddle
    • Lead (showing basic maneuvers such as backing and pivoting)

Side walkers

Side Walkers work with clients with disabilities and horses, walking beside the horse during riding sessions.

  • Duties include interacting with clients, assisting during mount and dismount, assisting the client during activities such as grooming the horse, playing games, and other tasks.
  • Training is provided; no experience is necessary

Other opportunities

  • Office assistance with answering phone, greeting visitors, and filing
  • Facilities assistance with cleaning and maintenance
  • Special events help


Exceptional Equestrians is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides equine-assisted therapies to individuals with special needs.
